We believe that a thorough assessment lends to optimal outcomes for our clients. Our assessment services support neurological diagnostic investigations, identify clinical needs for case management clients, and direct treatment for psychological therapy and rehabilitation.
Our therapeutic expertise includes psychological therapy and cognitive rehabilitation for people affected by physical and neurological conditions.
We offer services to treat:
• Individuals affected by acquired brain injury (TBI or stroke)

We choose our clinicians carefully. Many of our clinicians work concurrently within the NHS and the private sector, ensuring continued professional development, appropriate supervision, and adherence to the government's NICE clinical guidelines. The Cognition Clinic Limited | Registered in England and Wales No. 9622160
We have a wealth of experience treating individuals who are struggling to emotionally and psychologically adjust to difficult, often life-changing, health problems. Such treatments should always begin with a comprehensive psychological assessment in order to fully understand the needs of the client. This in turn will support our clinician to develop a bespoke approach to therapy.
At The Cognition Clinic we have expertise assessing the psychological needs of individuals affected by physical, medical, and neurological health conditions. Our assessments will often recommend psychological or neuropsychological therapy, which the The Cognition Clinic can provide should you choose our services.
Cognitive assessment is sometimes referred to as 'memory testing'. During evaluation the client will undergo tests that examine a range of cognitive abilities including attention, memory, processing speed, language, visual perception, problem solving and organisation. The tests are largely paper based and not at all invasive or harmful.
The cognitive assessment identifies a profile of strengths and weakness, which helps with neurological or neuropsychiatric diagnosis. The cognitive assessment can also be used to help understand strengths and weakness following an acquired brain injury, such as a stroke or traumatic brain injury. This information helps the process of neuro-rehabilitation and vocational rehabilitation.
At the end of the cognitive assessment a report will be provided to the referrer. The report may recommend that the client receives cognitive rehabilitation or psychological therapy, which The Cognition Clinic can also provide should you choose our services.
A neuropsychological needs assessment is a more comprehensive and holistic evaluation of an individual's needs following an acquired brain injury such as a stroke or traumatic brain injury (TBI).
This assessment includes exploring not only the cognitive and behavioural changes associated with acquired brain injury, but also the emotional and psychological impact on the affected individual and their family.
Referrals are typically made by brain injury case managers where the assessment plays an important role in understanding and directing the neuro-rehabilitation needs of the individual and their family.
Neuropsychological or cognitive rehabilitation is likely to be indicated following a needs assessment. The Cognitive Clinic can provide these treatments should you choose our services.
We offer mental capacity assessments for individual with cognitive impairment. We typically only take referrals from medical consultants and solicitors. In some cases, we may need to complete a cognitive assessment prior to completing a mental capacity assessment. Please contact The Cognition Clinic to discuss your referral in more detail.
At the Cognition Clinic we have psychologists who specialise in treating the emotional and psychological distress often experienced among people living with long-term or traumatic health conditions. Psychological distress can present itself in a range of different way including:
• Anxiety issues, including panic attacks, phobias, and obsessive compulsive disorder
• Post-traumatic stress
Our clinicians have expertise treating these psychological difficulties with individuals who have a range of different physical and neurological health conditions such as:
• Chronic pain
• Traumatic brain injury
• Degenerative neurological conditions, such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease
• Spinal injury
Following an acquired brain injury (i.e. traumatic brain injury or stroke), or with the deterioration of certain neurological conditions and dementia, people can struggle to manage day-to-day activities due to problems with their cognitive capabilities.
We can provide strategies to manage problems with attention, concentration, and memory, as well as other difficulties with organisation and planning. Our psychologists and neuropsychologists will provide client-focussed treatment to help you or your client achieve optimum levels of independence and improved confidence.
Neuropsychological rehabilitation is frequently required to support the long-term rehabilitation of people affected by acquired brain injury. Treatment can include cognitive rehabilitation, neurobehavioural management, and psychological therapy specially adapted for individuals with cognitive and/or language impairments.
The overall aim of neuropsychological treatment is to optimise the client's outcome throughout the process of rehabilitation by optimising their independence to manage day-to-day tasks, socialisation with others, and participation with their chosen vocational activities (i.e. work, study, parenting). We also believe that acquired brain injury affects the family, which is why we also offer therapy for family members and children.
Our neuropsychologists have extensive experience working among multidisciplinary neuro-rehabilitation services, both within the NHS and as part of independent treating teams for medico-legal purposes. Our neuropsychologists are skilled at working with other health professionals and case managers, often taking overall clinical lead for the purposes of goal-focussed neuro-rehabilitation.
The team of expert witnesses at The Cognition Clinic always deliver rigorous assessments and robust reports. We focus on civil-law cases involving personal or catastrophic injury (inc. traumatic brain injury), psychological injury, and clinical negligence claims.
Our expertise includes the assessment of psychological and neuropsychological impact to injury and acquired medical problems. Common instructions have been as follows:
• Neuropsychological assessment of cognitive capabilities following traumatic brain injury
• Psychological assessment of mental health status (including post-traumatic stress) following an occupational/workplace accident
• Neuropsychological assessment of cognitive abilities in suspected mild brain injury or concussional disorders
• Psychological assessment of mental health status and psychological adjustment following an acquired physical/medical condition due to clinical negligence
We appreciate that writing medico-legal reports is not the same as writing clinical documents for the NHS or other treatment cases. Our expert witnesses have all completed additional training in medico-legal report writing (inc. Bond Solon), and are aware of civil procedure rules when conducting assessments and completing reports. We can ensure that our reports are expertly written for the needs of the court.
We understand that time is of the essence when it comes to the medico-legal process. We aim to provide an assessment within two weeks of instruction and complete a report within the next four weeks. If we are not able to provide a report to you in this time-frame we will be open from the very beginning, giving you the option to choose another expert witness in order to meet your demands of time.
We also accept instructions from solicitors within family, housing, personal injury and criminal proceedings where the parties are publicly funded. Please contact The Cognition Clinic to discuss such instructions.
We have a number of consulting rooms across Central and Greater London. We aim to provide for all of our clients who may have difficulty travelling longer distances. We can also provide home visits depending on the referral and the client's needs.
